The Look and Style of Black and White Photography
The previous article discussed the use of vibrant colors in photography. This article approaches the subject of color from the opposite end of the spectrum: black and white photography. For some, black and white may seem old fashioned but in the photography world it has many wonderful benefits, in addition to making a great photograph.
In the last article, it was discussed that color selection is based a lot on personal preference, but there are times when one color tone will work better than others. When it comes to understanding color tones, here’s what black and white can do for you:
- Versatility:
Sometimes when taking photographs, you won’t be given an ideal situation, such as poor lighting. In these instances you won’t get vibrant colors, or even the colors that you want. One of the best advantages to black and white photography is that it’s great for all settings and almost all lighting situations. Plus you can also use shadows to create mood in your photos.
- Focus:
In contrast to vibrant colors, which portray the great detail of your subject and your subject’s surroundings, black and white is all about focus. With less color to distract the eye, black and white draws the eye’s attention exclusively to the subject of your photograph if the image is composed well. This is especially useful for more intimate portrait photography.
- Variety:
Black and white portraits are unique. They’re also artistic, nostalgic, and to many they’re very classy. If you’re looking to shake up your photography, black and white photography may be what you’re looking for. Obviously you get different looking photographs, but you’ll also learn new techniques to take full advantage of black and white and shadows.
Black and white photographs create so many different moods, including formality or gloomy settings, and a unique style all their own. If you’re wondering what black and white can do for you, versatility, focus, and variety are among the most common benefits. It’s also a fun way to try something new!
